Two Words: READ IT.
So I haven't seen the movie. Hadn't even heard of the book until the movie came out. Then, for my Birthday in September my little brother Rudi gave me the book. I had heard good reviews about the movie but didn't know anything about it. I am so glad he gave me this book. I love reading books that address civil rights. I have such an interest in this time period. Maybe because it is so hard for me to understand, grasp, comprehend how human beings can treat other human beings so horrifically, because of their differences, and not even realize it. Now I am not saying I am perfect. I am sure I have made my ignorant mistakes. I know I have judged others wrongly. I am not going to try and hide my imperfections. But beating, raping, murdering, firing, putting someone in jail based solely upon the color of their skin....this I do not understand and don't know that I ever will.
This book made me cry, laugh out loud, cringe, applaud, and be thankful that I wasn't raised in the south before the 1980's. I know. There is still plenty of racism today. There is racism other places than in the Southern United States. And I know that this book doesn't depict everyone in the South; I am not stereotyping.
The Author of this book was raised in Jackson, Mississippi with a black maid (gasp, not politically correct!). So while the story is fiction. I am sure it depicts a lot of what she grew up with and saw, and while she is not black herself and can not in anyway speak for the Southern Black woman, she admits that. I like that she admits that. I like her writing. I like her depiction. I likes her Novel.
Read it. Even if you have already seen the movie. You will not be disappointed. (and if you are, I am sorry)
